Fergie's Best Isn't That Great
Last summer had its share of good music as always, and we at least had a little variety on the radio. Enter, Fergie, the seemingly sex-crazed double-entree singer who sung about her humps, and London Bridge, and a myriad of other metaphors. But this time, instead of doing that stuff, it's a breakup song, with acoustic guitar, and only the hint of a beat.
The lyrics aren't too bad, pretty simple, with hints of 'where did that come from?' Such as, "We'll play jacks and uno cards." The verses are overall OK, nothing to brag about, and the vocals lack in some parts. However, the chorus comes out strong, and it and the acoustic guitar really make this a good song.
So overall, a good song, not a great one. A great change for Fergie, and definitely her best song by far, Black Eyed Peas or not. But in terms of getting this song, I wouldn't buy it, but I'd get it by other means if you know what I mean.
What did Frankie Valli do to deserve this?
Fergie's "Big girls don't cry (Personal)" is,rest assured,NOT a bland Black Eyed Peas-flavored cover version of Frankie Valli&the Four Seasons' classic. Fergie's ballad is all about how she has to take care of herself, find serenity, etc. It's an "ALL ABOUT MEEEEE" song. One feels for the anonymous love interest. Certainly he deserves better.
"Big girls don't cry (Personal)" highlights Fergie's annoying vocals (like wandering around,off-key) It's an overproduced pop mess. It doesn't do the Jersey Boys any justice. Big girls don't cry,and they don't buy this turgid ballad either.
Personally Strong
There is so much you can say about Fergie from her fame as part of The Black Eyed Peas. But, her solo debut The Dutchess has had a few surprise songs. Big Girls Don't Cry, the third single from that album is a very heartfelt, and down to Earth ballad. It is a real departure from her other hit songs which are more upbeat. It has a simplistic feel that matches that is very mellow and elequent. I like the song a whole lot, because it shows a more natural tone to Fergie's soulful voice, and what she does to make it worth while. I really hope Fergie can keep making more songs like this one on her next record, or with The Black Eyed Peas.
Song: B 1/2+
